THE COMMON APPLICATION

THE COMMON APPLICATION

The Common Application is used by most of the top colleges and universities in America. While many schools will require additional supplements, the Common Application will organize every part of a student’s application.

The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) is both a research tool for learning more about Boarding Schools and an application that many of these schools will accept, similar to the Common Application for colleges.

Testing Information

TOEFL

The TOEFL is a standardized test that assesses your ability to speak, read, write and listen in English at a university level. Most colleges and universities require the TOEFL if your native language is not English, if you attended a high school whose primary language of instruction was not English, or if you attended high school in a non-English speaking country.

COLLEGE BOARD

COLLEGE BOARD

The SAT is the common standardized test most students will take when applying to colleges and universities. While it is an important piece of an application, it is not necessarily the most important piece. Some schools will not even require that an applicant submit their score.
The SAT Subject Tests are meant to highlight a student’s strength in particular subjects. They provide a chance for a student to improve their profile.

ACT

ACT

The ACT is an alternative standardized test to the SAT. It consists of English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning with an optional Writing section. Different institutions regard the ACT in different ways, sometimes accepting it in place of the SAT.

While published rankings are often used to distinguish one school from another, there is no official ranking in America. Each college ranking list is biased and changes year to year based on some legitimate factors and some questionable factors. We have provided links to a few to demonstrate how rankings are subjective to whoever publishes them and should not be used as the determining factor of the quality of a school.
